Every September the Toronto Fashion Incubator (www. fashionincubator. com) connects its members with the city's style press and industry reps at an annual media breakfast. This year's event, at the Drake Hotel (1150 Queen West) on September 20, launched the spring collections of a gaggle of newbie garmentos and established labels. According to our wardrobe guesstimates, next season's covetables include Gill Birol 's spice pendant necklaces, a slouchy pleated canvas pocket jacket from Karamea (www.karamea.ca) and every single piece of Hyphen 's (www. hyphennation.com) pastel "nude beach" line.
The Cashmere bathroom tissue folks toilet-papered the Young Centre for the Performing Arts (www.youngcentre.ca) in the Distillery District September 21 to crown the winner of their White Cashmere fashion competition. Students from George Brown College , Seneca College and the International Academy of Design were given bolts of tissue to weave, braid, knit and pleat into a high-style look. George Brown student Nancy Haong 's flower-and leaf-embellished gown won her the $2,500 prize. Log on to www.cashmere.ca after October 11 to check out the finalists' designs.
Also on Septemberr 21, 69 Vintage (1100 Queen West, 416-516-0669) owner Kealan Sullivan and her People's Boutique designer collective cleared the bar at the Social to strut new, reworked and retro menswear looks. A cast of blush-faced model boys burst from paper fabric garment bags wearing paint-splattered Dickies khakis and Too Drunk to Fuck vests. Our fave was the Face (www.gimmesomeface.com) collection of leather jackets painted with owl and wolf face stencils by designers Owen Milburn and Emily Powell (who happens to staff our NOW reception desk).
VIP tickets have already sold out for the Threads 2006 charity fashion show (www.plan-e.ca/threads2006) at Revival (783 College) tonight (Thursday, September 28), but you can still snag $25 general-admission entry when doors open at 8 pm. This year's roster of designers includes Dagg and Stacey , Greenbaum Clothing , Juma , Preloved , House of Spy and one of our Montreal faves, Valérie Dumaine .
