To the ballot box!
Guests at Toronto Alternative Fashion got a lucky first look at the 10 finalists in NOW's Designer Challenge on October 17. Now it's your turn to vote. Visit Trove (793 Bathurst), Skirt(903 Dundas West), Frock (97 Roncesvalles), Boutique Le Trou (940 Queen West), Distill (55 Mill, building #56), Iki (19 Kensington), Pho Pa (698 Queen West), Propaganda (686 Yonge), Wash Up & Brush Co. (107 Danforth) and Red Pegasus (628 College) to check out each of the designs and pick up your ballot. Finalists will be chosen from your votes, and our judging panel will pick the winner at NOW's 25th birthday bash November 2.
Alumni, industry supporters and dolled-up fashion students sardine- packed into the Century Room on October 4 for the International Academy of Design and Technology's Revolution fashion show. Kudos to IADT organizers for a 60-minute show (grad presentations can push three hours), but it's time for design schools to heed audience "too long" moans and groans and edit shows down to the traditional 15 to 20 minutes. Thankfully, the last three dress collections on the runway - by style-skilled Joelle Wall, Rosemary Quintieri and Blanca Molina - were worth the wait.
The city's art and fashion camps collided on October 5 when the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art (952 Queen West, 416-395-0067, www.mocca.toronto.on.ca) launched a pair of style-related exhibits. The main space houses Unholy Alliance: Art + Fashion Meet Again, including an army of dress forms sporting Lydia K's woolly pom-pom pasties, Nick Cave's Soundsuit judy encased in wooden twigs and Clemencia Labin's columns upholstered in patchwork fabric and fun fur. Fashion photographer Steven Meisel's Future Species show takes over the secondary gallery. Both run until November 12.
Leather love in
Northbound Leather (www.northbound.com) turned 20 this year, and its annual fetish extravaganza hits the 10-year mark. Decadence fills the Docks (11 Polson) with a cast of characters in leather, rubber and PVC on Saturday (October 21). Tickets are $45 advance at Northbound (586 Yonge, 416-972-1037), or $55 at the door.
