Studio Gang shindig
The strip of Ossington between Dundas and Queen has only recently attracted a steady stream of hipsters who hop from the Sparrow (92 Ossington) to the Crooked Star (202 Ossington). So it's crazy to realize that trailblazing neighbourhood boutique Studio Gang (112A Ossington, 416-536-4264) is celebrating its fifth year on the street. Owner Deborah Korosec staged a birthday fashion show on November 4 that saw models shimmying in the window in ruched-sleeve turtle tunics and felty hooded coats.
Holt Renfrew's (50 Bloor West, 416-922-2333) annual holiday window unveiling on November 7 marked the start of the gift shopping season. We arrived to find families and fashionistas gazing through the store's glass panes at lush winter lodge-style vignettes. Stop by to take a gander at mannequins in New Year's worthy frocks and dapper suits schmoozing among gilt unicorn heads and stairways loaded with cherubs.
A quick cab hop that same November 7 night brought us down to the Design Exchange (234 Bay, 416-363-6121, www.dx.org), where a small rainy-night crowd mingled in the lobby around the DX's new Q'Enco exhibit. The show featured Peruvian textiles and was organized by DesignAid (www.designaid.org), an organization that connects with artisans to help create sustainable communities through design. You can find Q'Enco products at the Distillery District's Gibsone Jessop Gallery (55 Mill, building #4, 416-360-6800) until Friday (November 17).
Choc full of fashion
Over the past year, we've received invites to fashion shows strutting designs made out of toilet paper and duct tape, and we even helped NOW organize its newsprint-dress Designer Challenge. But the most delicious style demo of the year had to be November 8's Cadbury Chocolate Couture Show at the Carlu (444 Yonge), which featured Canadian-designed cocoa looks tempered, piped and moulded together by JS Bon Bons' (163 Dupont, 416-920-0274) Jenn Stone. Standouts included Mercy's Courrèges-inspired chocolate paillette A-line dress and Doll Factory Studio's sweet negligee-and-fishnets look.
