I'm ashamed to say that in my 26 years of shoeaholism I've never taken a nicely outfitted step into Bloor and Bay's Davids (66 Bloor West, 416-920-1000). The shop has just undergone a major renovation, though, and I've been in four times in the past two weeks to check out haute styles by labels like Paul Smith and Lanvin as well as the space, beautifully revamped by design firm Burdifilek. Next-door shoe store neighbour Capezio (70 Bloor West, 416-920-1006) has also been made over in a rocky style mimicking the new ROM crystal down the road and comes stocked with similarly chic footwear at more accessible prices.
Eco is The New Black
The kids over at Ryerson's School of Interior Design must have some pretty inky fingers. NOW sent them 3,000 copies of our paper to create an original piece of furniture that will be on display at The New Black year-end show (www.yearendshow.com). The exhibition runs April 26 to 28 at the school (302 Church) and focuses on new, sustainable design and building approaches.
Students are in the home stretch of their school year, but the city's DIY studios are just kicking off their spring season. Margie Jewellery Studio (1402 Queen East, studio C4, 416-916-6072, www.margiejewellery.com) has finally opened up, offering a program including introductory courses on metalsmithing and flameworking.
If you're in the Annex, register for Nanopod's (322 Harbord, 647-219-0585, www.nanopod.tv) May 26 and 27 glass-fusing and jewellery-making intensive.
Bling not your thing? Nathalie-Roze & Co. (1015 Queen East, 416-792-1699, www.nathalie-roze.com) offers Sewing 101 (easy tote bags) on Saturday (April 28) and Sewing 102 (skirt alert) on Sunday (April 29).
Freedom face lift
Fashion co-op Freedom Clothing (939 Bloor West, 416-530-9946) has just wrapped up a store reno, and shoppers are invited to drop by to browse the spring lines Friday (April 27) starting at 8 pm.
I don't really know what to make of a store with a name like Brazen Hussy (863 Queen West, 416-595-9468, www.brazenhussy.ca). The chip on my shoulder says I should furrow my brow, but there's a chuckle rumbling deep inside my gut. I'll check it out and let you know just how brazen it is.
