Revolutions from the Industrial to the sexual are the theme of this year's Power Ball fundraiser taking place tonight (Thursday, May 3) at the Power Plant Contemporary Art Gallery (231 Queens Quay West) starting at 8:30 pm. Musical acts scheduled to get the cultured and flush shaking their designer-clad groove thangs include New York's Earl Greyhound, the Social's DJ DMT and Broken Social Scene's Justin Peroff. If you forget to dress to theme, hairstylists will be on site to pile a Marie Antoinette coif onto your head. Tickets are $160 at the door.
The RSVP deadline for Pop Design Salon & Spa's (96 Spadina, suite 202, 416-363-7007) Mother's Day Shopping Party tonight (Thursday, May 3) is long gone, but you can still try calling to plead your procrastinating case. Hair demonstrations, makeup tips, hors d'oeuvres and great gift bags keep the beautifying crowd busy between 6 and 9 pm. Look out for goodies from Smudgepot Cosmetics, Pink Twig Floral Boutique, Jewellery by Danielle and Eminence Organic Skincare.
Log on to www.batashoemuseum.ca/ batashoedesigncompetition/ to check out the winners of the Bata Shoe Museum's (327 Bloor West, 416-979-7799) first International Shoe Design Competition. Judges including museum founder Sonja Bata and Fashion Television's Jeanne Beker evaluated student submission from around the world based on function, elegance and provocation. The first-place winner, Nadia de Nobrega from De Montfort University in Leicester, UK, created a black-and-white boot wrapped in origami-inspired folded leather.
Few eyewear companies produce such iconic peepers as the UK's Oliver Goldsmith brand (www.olivergoldsmith.com), and in Toronto the only place to grab the ready-to-wear sunglasses line is Spectacle (752 Queen West, 416-603-0123l; 3342 Yonge, 416-484-9000, www.spectacle-eyewear.com). Look for oversized frames, geometric lens shapes and retro-mod materials that are more classic Audrey Hepburn than Nicole Ritchie flip-flopping out of McDonald's. And speaking of Spectacle, keep your eyes peeled for a new Distillery District location opening soon.
