Fast fashion update
The list of quick-fix style retailers crashing Toronto's shopping scene keeps growing with the opening of U.S. based Forever21 (302 Yonge, 416-260-9019, www.forever21.com) in the Gap's old Dundas Square digs. Look for the usual mix of Madras shorts and hyper-graphic-print Ts. At Queen and Spadina, H&M will open its newest location (427-429 Queen West, www.hm.com) on August 16. The company recently announced that a collection by its newest collaborator, Italian maximalist designer Roberto Cavalli , arrives November 8.
The Domestic Collective , made up of Jess Riva Cooper , Jennifer Graham , Hillary Webb , Norah Deacon , Bebhinn Jennings and Tiana Roebuck , creates modern art and textile pieces using traditional craft techniques. Highlights from their group show -- on until Sunday (July 8) at Distill (55 Mill, building 56, 416-304-0033, www.distillgallery.com) -- include Roebuck's felt paper doll dress brooch, which expands into a necklace piece, and Riva Cooper's Yes, I Am Carrying The Love Child Of Kaiser Soeze" centrepiece sculpture.
They like him
The fashion kingmakers at American Vogue have crowned Toronto-based Jeremy Laing (www.jeremylaing.com) as one of their July issue's top three designers to watch. Writer Florence Kane cites Laing's "inventive tucks and pleats" and clever, blown-up mineral prints when describing his metallic fall collection. The 27-year-old is already reaping the swaggy rewards of his growing international profile. At a June 27 Raymond Weil (www.raymondweil.com) presentation at the Four Season Centre for the Performing Arts , the Swiss watch company presented Laing (plus Canadian Idol's Farley Flex and Sharkwater director Rob Stewart ) with a swanky new timepiece.
