Joe on the grow
Under a white circus tent in the parking lot of Loblaws at 10 Lower Jarvis, Joe Fresh (www.joe.ca) unveiled its first kids' clothing collection on July 25. The back-to-school-ready fall collection, available at selected Loblaws and Superstores, includes preppy, uniform-style jumpers, sporty hoodies and micro ballet flats budget-priced between $5 and $28.
If the photographs that ran in last Thursday's Store Of The Week feature on Ministry of the Interior (80 Ossington, 416-564-5814) looked a little sparse, it's because we visited the day before the opening, and finishing touches were still in the works. We stopped in again during its July 26 launch bash to find it well stocked with the promised assortment of hyper-stylish interior goods.
Sheridan grad Lucas Bracalion 's oversized bird-shaped bamboo cage fills the window, surrounded by Marimekko bags. A mirror by exhibiting designer Jason Miller is inlaid with frosted shards mimicking the look of a taped-together piece of shattered glass. We're already budgeting for a designer lighting buy after browsing the full colourful collection of Jielde desk and floor lamps.
Magic Pony 's (694 Queen West, 416-861-1684, www.magic-pony.com) Mittenfists exhibit highlighting the work of Toronto artists Melinda Josie , Andrew Wilson and Jacob Whibley has its opening reception this evening (Thursday, August 2) between 7 and 10 pm. Look for Josie's imaginative nature illustrations, Wilson's geometric resin paintings and Team Macho member Whibley's collage-style blueprints. The show runs until August 25.
Every town needs a fashion band to poke fun at couture biz foibles and offer industry insiders a judgment-free opportunity to sport sheer muumuus and crocheted sundresses to sweaty basement gigs. T.O.'s take is Satan's Candy (www.myspace.com/satanscandyrocks), and the trio of fashion blogger Carolyn Rohaly , Doll Factory Studios damzel Rory Lindo and Elisa Coish held a private debutante debut Saturday, July 28. The set list included designer ditties like Fashion Up Your Ass along with general interest tunes Cougs Rule and Ode To Jager. Look for public gigs this fall and a Fashion Week show in late October.
