The new H&M store opening today (Thursday, August 16) at Queen and Spadina (427-429 Queen West, www.hm.com/ca) is barely a five-minute streetcar ride from its Eaton Centre location. Thanks to the label's marketing masterminds and fast fashion supremacy though, mall rats and hipsters alike have their kaffiyehs in a knot waiting for the doors to swing open at noon. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will christen the 10,000-square-foot shop, and the first 150 shoppers through the door receive 20 per cent discounts on their purchases.
To the horror of every layering-happy hipster, all you needed to look style-current this season was a glow-bright T-shirt printed with cheeky, block lettered fashion puns. The fad is already fading, so we're nominating the duds in C1 Art Space 's (44 Ossington, 416-538-7999, www.c1artspace.com) Artist T-Shirts And Tops show, on to September 2, as the next Toronto take on the trend. Local illustrators and artists have created original designs featuring graphic line drawings, screened patterns and even the occasional word or two. Make your pick at the exhibit's opening reception this Saturday (August 18) between 6 pm and 9 pm.
The Toronto Fashion Incubator ( www.fashionincubator.com) has announced its new home in the Music Building (285 Manitoba) on the Canadian National Exhibition grounds. According to the TFI's monthly newsletter, only three small studio spaces will be available during the first phase of development. The real estate limbo of the past three months led former resident labels Karamea (www.karamea. ca), Juma (www.juma.ca) and Nada (www.nadadesigns.com) to find independent studio spaces around the city's west end.
You only have until Sunday (August 19) to cast your online ballot for NOW's Up & Coming Designer Award at www.nowtoronto.com/designer.
