Fashion Week update
A lot of local fashion folks (including yours truly) were skeptical of the Fashion Design Council of Canada when word started to leak that Fashion Week's spring shows would be staged in tents at Nathan Phillips Square. Forgetting we're hearty Canucks, we worried about the autumn cold during the October 22 to 27 event.
Now that the catwalk's being readied and we've had time to tabulate the number of Starbucks within a one-minute walking radius of City Hall, we've turned into giddy garmentos boostering the centrally located al fresco fashion festival. Go register at www.lorealfashionweek.ca.
Fashion Week's opening-night extravaganza is the taping of Project Runway Canada 's finale. Signed confidentiality agreements keep the outcome top secret, but Slice has just released the lineup of designer competitors in time for the series' October 8 premiere date. Well-known names include Jason Meyers (www.jasonmeyers.net) partner Michael Hatley , Franke's ( www.iamfranke.com) Kendra Francis , couture crazed Lucian Matis (www.lucianmatis.com) and Greta Constantine (www.gretaconstantine.com) designer Stephen Wong .
Blundstone boot wearers would probably shudder at the idea of their basic black footwear being bedazzled and painted into wearable art, but the company's Boot It Up (www.sketch.ca/ bootitup) fundraiser is using the gimmick in an auction for a good cause. Fifty pairs of Blundstones embellished by local artists and celebs are on display at this evening's (Thursday, September 27, at 7 pm) event at Steam Whistle Roundhouse (255 Bremner). Tickets are $20 (from 416-516-5428 ext 29), benefiting Sketch 's creative programs for homeless youth.
Nuit Blanche style
Nuit Blanche (Saturday, September 29) art hoppers looking for a fashion fix between Queen West gallery visits should check out Common Cloth 's (www.commoncloth.com) spring/ summer 2008 fashion show outside its Parkdale boutique (1233 Queen West, 416-203-7710). Gwynne Avenue will be closed off to create an outdoor catwalk space where designers Melanie Talbot and Kristina Bozzo premiere their 1970s-folk-era-inspired collection. Show time is 9 pm.
