Fashion Week Review: VAWK

There’s always a double agenda at a VAWK show.

While designer Sunny Fong is pushing his svelte sense of tailoring and an appreciation for luxe materials (sheer organza, neutral leathers and, of course, fur for fall), his business partner Ben Barry is focused on model diversity.

That mash up resulted in a bit of a mixed message last season, mainly because the debut VAWK collection was a quick 12 looks and it’s hard for most designers to make even a single statement in such an edited lineup.

It worked better at Monday afternoon’s presentation at the Art Gallery Ontario with an expanded number of exits showing as much range as the bodies, ages and ethnicities of the catwalk cast.

Favourite pieces included light grey shells with asymmetrical necklines tied into knotted straps, and high-waisted leather skirts, some with washed panels that added a kick of volume at their hems.
