Body Blue

BODY BLUE 199 Danforth, 416-778-7601, bodyblue.ca

With all the recent talk of indie shop closures, it’s nice to hear some success stories.

Local go-to denim destination Body Blue celebrates 25 years with not one, but two thriving downtown locations, on the Danforth and on Queen West (724 Queen West, 416-703-7601). What’s owner Sam Nirenberg’s secret to staying in business? A loyal customer base that appreciates quality clothes and exceptional service.

As much as they try, fast fashion shops like H&M can’t match the feel and fit of truly good denim. It’s one of those things you just have to pay for. Body Blue’s unisex stock changes daily, so there are always fresh styles to check out, and staff are among the most attentive in town.

Concerned about worker exploitation? Most of Nirenberg’s premium denim is manufactured in the States or Europe.

Body Blue picks: The store does a whole lot more than just denim and also makes a point of stocking Canadian brands. Check out Mackage’s Liana coated military trench ($450), Jenny Bird’s Long Horn Tusk earrings ($55) and Fidelity’s Ace mid-rise jean in vintage graphite ($194).

Look for: Body Blue’s long-weekend sale Thursday to Monday (May 15 to 19), when you can buy one, get one 50 per cent off on selected merchandise. Saturday (May 17) is also Seven for Mankind Day, when you get a gift with every purchase of Seven jeans.

Hours: Monday to Friday 10 am to 8 pm, Saturday 9:30 am to 6 pm, Sunday noon to 6 pm.
