When it comes to expressing oneself, fashion plays a huge role in constructing one’s identity.
Dress Codes, the theme of this year’s Fashion Art Toronto (FAT), the five-day festival that combines art, design and performance rooted in fashion, explores just that. Performer Mister Miguel, one of the more than 100 designers and artists appearing this year, says he hopes to deconstruct the ways clothes are seen when it comes to gender norms in his performance on Wednesday, April 13.
Partnering with fellow FAT designer Nuvango, the Toronto-based artist will perform his debut single Boy Toy on the catwalk. He says his performance will challenge society’s perceptions of what’s “gender-specific and what’s not” through his dancers’ costumes and choreographed moves.
Mister Miguel, who describes himself as an edgy, pop, happy artist, says Boy Toy was written two years when he was still in the midst of figuring out where he fit in as a musician. A graduate of The School of Toronto Dance Theatre, the Quebec-born singer and dancer says he’s been performing since he was a young boy.
