The week’s news,views and sales

A pop-up success

If you don’t already know who Cara Cheung (caracheung.com) is, you will soon. After making her mark at Toronto Fashion Week over a few seasons, the young local designer collaborates with Jacflash on a pop-up shop at 101 Yorkville. Originally meant to be open for 10 days in June, the store’s been so successful that Cheung’s extended the lease into July. Pick up her edgy yet elegant clothing and jewellery before it’s gone. Monday to Wednesday 10 am to 6 pm, Thursday and Friday 10 am to 8 pm, Saturday 10 am to 7 pm, Sunday noon to 6 pm.

The Royal York is buzzing

Turns out hotels aren’t just for humans they’re for bees, too. The Fairmont Royal York (100 Front, 416-368-2511, fairmont.com/royalyork) hosts a bee hotel on its rooftop built in partnership with eco-friendly beauty brand Burt’s Bees (burtsbees.ca) and Sustainable.TO to support solitary worker bees. Check out the hotel’s special prix fixe pollinator menu at EPIC Restaurant featuring local and pollinator-friendly items until the end of June, with a percentage of proceeds from menu sales donated to Pollinator Partnership Canada.

Better than birthday sex: a birthday sale

Go-to spot for cool designer finds Gravity Pope (1010 Queen West, 647-748-5155, gravitypope.com) celebrates its 24th anniversary with a sale until July 2. Get 15 per cent off regular price footwear and clothing and up to 50 per cent off spring 2014 footwear, clothing and accessories.

True patriot style

What better way to celebrate Canada Day than by shopping great Canadian fashion? Local brand Heartbeats T.O. (myheartbeatsto.ca) presents a pop-up shop Friday to Tuesday (June 27 to July 1) at Harbourfront Centre (235 Queens Quay West, 416-973-4000, harbourfrontcentre.com). Ten per cent of proceeds go to the Weekend to End Women’s Cancers (endcancer.ca).
