Introducing Matthew Gallagher

A lot of first time fashion week designers like to come out with a bang!

There’s the pre-show press release that anoints the untested talent a fashion industry savior and a flurry of invitations and follow up invitation to make sure you make the show because, really, it will change your life.

And then there’s the opposite approach. Let’s call it the sneak attack when a designer is confident that the clothes he or she puts down the catwalk will get enough people talking that the buzz will build and everyone who didn’t make time to see the new kid in the 4 pm time slot will be kicking themselves for missing a stellar debut.

That’s how it went down at Matthew Gallagher’s show on Thursday (pictured above). The Nova Scotia-born designer presented ten looks that were clean, simple and so sophisticated including a navy, floor length dress with bands of teal on the collar and cuffs and blouses open at the back to give them a fuller silhouette. I’m not one to boss retailers around but someone, no everyone, needs to pick up this collection stat.

UNTTLD also impressed by doing the black-on-black-on-black looks we’ve seen so much of on the fall runway so well. They succeeded by mixing up textiles and textures and adding sheer and shiny elements like diaphanous dresses and a sharp silk trench.

Outerwear brand Soia & Kyo showed lots of moto jackets and ribbed down coats. Rudsak‘s accessory lineup featured camo duffle bags and lots of covetable boots including black brogues for men and a buckled rain boot style for women.

On the schedule for fashion week Friday: Travis Taddeo, Thomas Balint and Caitlin Power at the tents. Lucian Matis’ main collection in the banking hall at One King West. Follow me on Twitter @NOWLifeStyle.
