The breakout collection during last March's round of fall 2012 runway shows was unquestionably Caitlin Power's (caitlinpower.com) dark, sci-fi lineup. The designer is back on the runway during Toronto's Fashion Week (worldmastercardfashionweek.com) on October 23 as a part of Mercedes Benz's seasonal Start Up competition. Here's what to expect.
Describe the Caitlin Power look?
I design for a strong, empowered, sophisticated woman. She believes in classic tailored pieces but has a dark, edgy side to her. My design philosophy comes from my inspiration: architecture. Buildings are strong, powerful pieces, and so are women.
Why include menswear in your fall collection then?
I've always been inspired by men's tailoring, and at the time it just felt right. At this point I've learned that the type of men's garments I want to create are too pricey to produce in Canada. I've decided to put menswear on hold, but will revisit it in the future.
What's on your inspiration board for spring 2013?
"References of light, metallics, a half-man/half-robot and architectural staircases."
