Tammy Thorne

Who Tammy Thorne, editor-in-chief and publisher of Dandyhorse (dandyhorsemagazine.com), Canada’s arts and culture mag for cyclists former member, Toronto Cycling Committee steering committee member, Coalition for Active Transportation.

Claim to fame Kick-ass attitude. Dubbed a “bulldog” of the bike scene by the Globe, but what do they know ’bout cycling?

Thorne’s friends prefer to say she’s passionate, her trademark speeches acquiring a life of their own – and a name, too: the “T-ramble.” Thorne says she’s still perfecting the art of “talking my way into or out of any situation.” See?

She happily admits to being a little high-maintenance, but it’s difficult to find another woman who has so consistently championed cycling in Toronto. Thorne says the city needs to get way more serious about two-wheeled travel.

“More than 50 per cent of Torontonians travel by bike, yet we only have a tiny fraction of the road space.”

Words to ride by “Never pass on the right!”

Peddling these days Her bicycle user group at Sunnybrook, one of the largest in the city, with 300 members – she’s volunteer coordinator. And the spring safety issue of Dandyhorse, launching in June with “a huge party and lots of giveaways.” Featured inside: some yet-to-be-published research by U of T on the bike-ability of our neighbourhoods.
