SMART ART

It’s a holiday tradition for members and supporters of Toronto’s fabulous artist-run galleries to donate small, original works of art for seasonal fundraisers. With prices kept to a bare minimum, it’s a chance for would-be collectors to take the plunge. Gallery TPW’s Photorama 2000 features more than 100 photo-based works by A-list artists including Robert Burley, Ed Burtynsky, Debra Friedman, April Hickox, Kelly McCray, David Rasmus and Pamela Williams, all priced under $200 –some much lower. Opens tonight (Thursday, November 30) from 6 to 9 pm, and runs December 2 to 9 (80 Spadina, 504-4242). The Red Head Gallery’s No Bigger Than A Breadbox is already on view, with works from $50 to $250 by scores of ace artists including Jeannie Thib, Lyla Rye, Evelyn Von Michalofski, Fiona Smyth, John Abrams and Catherine Heard, and closes with a party Sunday (December 2) at 6:30 pm (96 Spadina, 504-5654). Both galleries are dark for Saturday’s (December 1) World AIDS Day.

MOD MODE

Modrobes throws a a party for the opening of its new retail location, with a hot DJ lineup Friday through Sunday (December 1-3), plus their own street-savvy line of “clothing for the modern world.” 239 Queen West.
