While Torontonians are giddy about the opening of IKEA's King
West East pop-up shop on July 31, New Yorkers with a craving for some (insert hilariously Swedish sofa name here) are hitching a ride to Red Hook.
Until now, Gotham's Billy bookcase buying masses have had to trek out to slightly less glamourous Elizabeth, New Jersey or further flung Hicksville, Long Island.
The arrival of the store's new catalogue accounts for some of the Red Hook hoopla but its big draw is its waterfront location and the free 20 minute water taxi ride departing from Pier 11 at the South Street Seaport. The voyage has already generated its fair share of controversy, as frugal Brooklynites have been hitching a ride into town on the SS Boholmen (not it's real name, but it works).
