Kathryn Walter

Rating: NNNNN

WHO: Kathryn Walter, visual artist/designer

WHERE: The foot of Bayview

WHEN: Thursday morning

CLOTHING: “I got these boots at Twinkle Toes (320 Queen West, 416-977-6435) for about $80. This is their second winter. My pants were $8 from my local Goodwill (3302 Dufferin, 416-782-3913, and others) – it tends to have pretty good stuff. I made my handbag. I have a small design company called FELT. My father’s family has been in the felt business for over a hundred years. It retails for $125 via www.feltstudio.com. My shirt was $5 from Value Village (1319 Bloor West, 416-539-0585, and others). I made my vest from industrial felt, of course. Maybe some day I’ll do FELT vests. I bought this jacket/sweater at Brava (483 Queen West, 416-504-8742) for about $10. My scarf was part of my grandmother’s collection of Siamese silks. I’m also wearing a pin of hers – it says, “Women’s War Work.” She was very active in the war effort in the 40s. The yellow gold band with a row of tiny diamonds on my left hand is from my husband, Greg, and the white gold one was his mother’s wedding band. The one on my right hand is made by Anne Sauteux, a designer from Montreal. The band is made from industrial felt and the rock, literally, is a piece of pink granite. I found it at Annie Thompson’s Studio (674 Queen West, 416-703-3843), where it cost 90 bucks. My earrings were a gift from my mom. I believe she got them at the ROM Reproduction Shop during the Pearl exhibit last fall. My red-and-orange wool handmade felt hat is by a designer named Alice Phillips from Vancouver. I got it from the shop in the Textile Museum (55 Centre, 416-599-5321). They also carry some of my FELT stuff, and one time I traded my order for this. It retails for about $125.”

HAIR: “I’ve been cutting it myself for years.”

MY STYLE: “Bricolage.”

UPCOMING: “Remnants, an installation at Zsa Zsa Gallery (962 Queen West) as part of the Images Festival Of Independent Media (416-971-8405). It opens Friday (April 8) at 7 pm in conjunction with several of the Images Off Screen projects on Queen West. Remnants will run April 9 to 15 every day (except Monday) from 2 to 6 pm.”
