Melissa Levin

Rating: NNNNN

WHO: Melissa Levin, co-director of CBC documentary Class Queers and 8 other short videos, fabric designer and printer

WHEN: Saturday, 2:30 pm

WHERE: Scooter Girl (187 Roncesvalles, 416-534-2211, www.scootergirl.net), “a creative and fun store for kids”

CLOTHING: “I got my favourite vintage 60s coat at the Aberfoyle Flea Market in Aberfoyle, Ontario, for $50. It’s by Jay Garment of Toronto. My cotton undershirt cost $6.99 at the German Old Country Shop (355 Roncesvalles, 416-535-7641). My shirt was on sale for $8 at Old Navy in New York City, and I bargained the sales clerk down to $1.99 for these striped poly pants at Thrift Town (1473 Queen West, 416-537-9673) – the pants needed some sewing. I hate practical winter boots, but my style-conscious girlfriend, artist Nina Levitt, picked these out at the Bata Shoe Outlet in the Dixie Outlet Mall (1250 South Service, 905-271-6814) for $30. My earrings cost $20 at a tiny jewellery shop in Paris on Rue Daguerre, this Swatch watch was a gift from my friends Carole and Michal, and my bracelet is from my pal Nas Khan. My MedicAlert bracelet is unfortunately now part of my everyday ensemble. You can get these at Shoppers Drug Mart (728 Yonge, 416-920-0098, and others) for $30. I’m sure my silver ring was less than $20 on the street in either NYC or San Francisco.”

HAIR: “I’m still looking for that special someone who knows how to cut curly hair so I don’t end up with a bubblehead.”

MY STYLE: “Dyke-o-licious.”

INTO: “Thrifting, making and looking at art and movies, playing board games with Jay and Howard, and my pussy cat Golda Pearl. Thrift/bazaar experiences like the Bar-Bazaar Sunday (February 29) at the Gladstone (1214 Queen West, 416-531-4635) from 3 to 7 pm. It’s a funky funder for Inside/Out (www.insideout.on.ca), with drinks, a silent auction, bake sale and, if you ask me I can help you style an outfit from our clothing selection. For more info: http://www.insideout.on.ca/events/gladstone.htm.”
