WHO: Michael Barker, one-third of the Shag magazine collective
WHERE: Come as You Are (701 Queen West, 416-504-7934)
WHEN: 10 am, December 16
CLOTHING: "On a good day my hair does a pre-show Nick Cave thing; the secret is lots of Brylcreem ($7.95, Shoppers Drug Mart, 728 Yonge, 416-920-0098, and others). I had busted-up front teeth for years, so I have to give a smile and a nod to my dentist, Dr. Martin Bourgeois (964 1/2 Bloor West, 416-588-8839), for the great bridgework he did for me. I had coverage at the time, so I don't even remember the total cost. My generic black scarf just showed up in my wardrobe one day. I bought my second-hand bomber jacket at King Sol's going-out-of-business sale for around $60. I got my boy-in-black cowboy shirt with embroidered red roses at Circa Forty ($22, 456 Queen West, 416-504-0880). My regulation-issue rock 'n' roll studded belt was $50 at Silver Cross (331 Queen West, 416-599-3311). All my tattoos are by the lovely and talented Katja Opel at Studio Tattoo Mania in Montreal. I used to wear a fair amount of jewellery, but I keep it simple now; I've been wearing this style of articulated drop-plate silver bracelet for about half my life. I think I got this one at Courage My Love (14 Kensington, 416-979-1992). My jeans were a lucky find at Value Village (2119 Danforth, 416-698-0621, and others) and cost about $30. (Best recent Value Village finds: a perfect-fit off-the-rack tuxedo for $30 and gorgeous never-worn fire-engine-red vinyl shoes by David of Italy for $25). My underwear is my SHAG errand wear, a leopard-print underthing from (of all places) the men's department at the Bay ($20, 176 Yonge, 416-861-6335, and others). My socks are your basic black socks from Chockys (327 Spadina, 416-977-1831) and were around $5. I bought my Rangers on sale at Get Out Side (437 Queen West, 416-593-5598) a couple of years ago. It was an awesome deal I paid something like $200 for two pairs, these puppies and their bigger sisters."
HAIR: "When it gets seriously untameable I go to Erin Olmstead (Restless, by appointment, 416-504-2605)."
Style: "Carnie casual."
Into: "Being part of my beloved little Shag collective, along with Simone Moir and Cecilia Berkovic, and its fledgling foray into the tickliest space between art and pornography, Shag magazine ($5, available at Come as You Are and others)."
