Mystery Science Theater 3000: XVI

MYSTERY SCIENCE THEATER 3000: XVI (Shout Factory, 1988-1999) Rating: NNN DVD package: NNN Rating: NNN

Crap movies deserve a cheesy showcase, and MST3K does not disappoint. Episodes shot for as little as $100 tell the saga of an ordinary guy trapped aboard a space ship with his robot pals, who’s forced by his employers to watch bad movies. The flicks offer ample opportunity for silly skits and endless talking as our heroes riff on acting, plot, technical blunders and anything else they can think of. When they’re on, they’re hilarious.

Three of the four movies here are ordinary stinkers: The Corpse Vanishes, a Bela Lugosi mad scientist epic, Warrior Of The Lost World, a post-apocalypse actioner, and Night Of The Blood Beast, a monster-is-loose epic. But Santa Claus, a garish Mexican kids’ movie that has the fat guy battling a horned demon from hell, is truly surreal and sure to become a holiday favourite. It comes with an appreciation doc, the best of the set’s scanty extras.
