Eyes on the prize
The Fashion Design Council of Canada has chosen the seven finalists for its first Designer Development Fund Award. Andy The-Anh, Travis Taddeo, Katrina Tuttle, Reva Mivasagar, Lucian Matis, Barila and Aime Luxury were chosen from the more than 50 applicants and are all in the running for the $10,000 prize. A jury will announce the winner at the next LG Fashion Week (lgfashionweek.ca) taking place in Toronto October 19 to 24.
It's a bling thing
Bling has come a long way, babies. From rap lyrics to the pages of fashion magazines, the world's most loved/hated "sparkle" synonym is now entering the world of indie design with the opening of Marcia Huyer and Robert Hengeveld's Industrial Bling show at Made (867 Dundas West, 416-607-6384, madedesign.ca). The installation combines Huyer's fabric sculptures with Hengeveld's knack for multimedia manipulation. Tonight's (Thursday, August 6) reception is from 7 to 9 pm. Runs to September 19.
Gus* furniture is extra-frugal until August 16 at Style Garage's (938 Queen West, 416-534-4343, stylegarage.com) summer sale, where sofas, ottomans and other modern buys are marked down 20 per cent. For home shoppers with more old-fashioned tastes, Sherway Gardens' (25 West Mall, 416-621-1070, sherwaygardens.ca) Summer Antique Sale is on through August 9.
The clothing deals are maxed out at Body Blue (201 Danforth, 416-778-7601; and 724 Queen West, 416-703-7601, bodybluedenimlab.com), with a selection of denim from designer brands like Earnest Sewn, Diesel and Seven reduced to $60. For a fix of West Coast Canadian chic, shop Dace.ca's spring 2009 sale, where womenswear is discounted up to 80 per cent.
