Sweet Deal bites
Propaganda (686 Yonge, 416-961-0555) holds a shopping fundraiser this evening (Thursday, June 26). Stop by between 4 and 8 pm to take advantage of 30 per cent discounts; 10 per cent of the event’s proceeds will be donated to True Davidson Acres, a home for LGBTQ seniors. Ron White’s (55 Bloor West, 416-964-6400, and others, ronwhite.ca) summer sale is on now, with crazy deals on warm-weather styles by Geox, Mephisto and Cole Haan until June 30.
Better living think tank Open City (opencityprojects.com) charged OCAD’s third-year industrial design class with conceptualizing neighbourhood-specific improvement projects. The results are on view as part of the Toronto Unbound exhibit, on through Saturday (June 28) at Xpace (58 Ossington, 416-849-2864, xpace.info).
The 22 projects range from the practical (Carla Gould’s Ambient Pigeon Lighting would brighten up west-end underpasses) to the playful (Aidin Khoylou’s Swing Patio could create a gathering place at the corner of Carlton and Parliament).
Six selected ideas including Amanda Billarks Living Canvas, a Corktown mural that emerges from a green wall every winter, and Vincent Monastero’s Red Carpet painted at a Parkdale streetcar stop will be implemented by the city over the next year.
Other projects like Casey Wong’s Radio Cabbagetown appear ready to go it alone. Wong has already received story and music submissions from area residents ready to jump on the air of his planned low-power station.
Just down Ossington, Ministry of the Interior (80 Ossington, 416-533-6684) has added Montreal design darlings Samare to its haute home stuff mix. Stark square metal frames are finished with babiche, an ancestral Aboriginal weaving technique.
Shoppers craving a runwayesque look minus the bone-dry bank account can get their cheap chic fix at StyleHog.com. The Toronto-based site compiles seasonal trends and designer references and then links style surfers to mass market and fast fashion retailers selling similar looks. This week’s hot picks include tennis-inspired pieces seen on Chanel and DKNY catwalks and pieces from Joe Fresh and Urban Outfitters that channel their sporty vibe.
