What I bought: living large in Liberty Village

Many 30-year-olds celebrate their milestone year with a cake (accompanied by a night of bad decisions). Heather Mundy celebrated hers with her third condo purchase.

The first thing you notice in the two-storey Liberty Village condo is the impressive staircase, Mundy’s favourite feature.

Though her dream list of furniture sources includes West Elm, Mundy laments that “a lot of the stuff is Ikea.” The couch, which has survived eight years of “red wine spills,” was one of her earliest purchases.

She has managed to score a number of interesting finds from the Swedish megastore, like some of the framed pictures on the staircase wall (others are vintage 1940s magazine covers, inherited from her grandmother) and the oversized map above the couch.

The art in the dining room was one of her first “grown-up” purchases (aside from those three condos, presumably!), made by a friend’s mother, artist Eva Lewarne. Mundy says Liberty Village offered the most bang for her buck, including a second storey and bathroom, a building with a concierge (“I feel safer,” she says) and a private outdoor space.

Mundy found her condo through Lauren Haw of Zoocasa.com, a Toronto-based real estate brokerage.

Wish list

“I wanted more space to entertain. This is my first place where I could fit a dining room table.”

The table, from Ikea, unfolds to accommodate six guests for dinner. Mundy also likes the large amount of counter space in the kitchen: “I was so sick of galley kitchens, and I find everyone congregates around the kitchen anyway.”

The chairs around the island, a gift from her brother and sister-in-law, “survived their three kids, so I know they’re solid.”

What she got

A two-storey, two-bedroom, two-bathroom Liberty Village condo with 1,000 square feet, in a building with a swimming pool, gym and even a bowling alley.

Why she loves the neighbourhood

“Lots of friends have moved into the neighbourhood, so it’s great. My married friends are settling in the east end, and the single ones are mostly in the west. We spend a lot of time at the Local [Public Eatery] – probably too much. Their chicken tacos are amazing.”
