Ryerson : tune in

COVER : Eat, drink

Rating: NNNNN

Ryerson’s CKLN (88.1 FM) is run almost exclusively by volunteers check out www.ckln.fm but the real clincher for tuning in is the amazingly rich variety of music you’ll hear, introduced by people who really know their shit.

For a Bollywood and reggae fix, check out Rebel Music (Monday 2:30 to 5 pm) for Indian soundtrack favourites and island vibes. Equally wide-ranging is Limin’ In De African Diaspora (Wednesday 11 am to 2 pm), offering calypso, soukous, soca, steel pan, mambo, R&B, gospel and jazz.

Strap on those spiked arm bands, corpse paint and your best King Diamond shirt for the long-running and eardrum-lacerating Aggressive Rock (Sunday 9:30 to 11:30 pm), an awesome mix of all things hardcore, thrash, doom, black, death and stoner metal with long-time hosts like the lovably seething Cameron Anti-Self. Just as heavy and downright bludgeoning is the early-morning Satan Takes A Holiday assault (Sunday 3 to 7 am), where you’ll hear more of the same doom, gloom and thunder.

Talk programming includes the weekday morning news-and-views show Rude Awakening (Monday to Friday 6 to 7 am) hosted by campus newspaper The Eyeopener. If you hate current events and prefer books, fine, just listen to In Other Words (Tuesday 2 to 3 pm), about all things literary, including writer interviews.

Radio Cliteracy (Sunday 10:30 to 11 am) spreads the word with a feminist twist about women’s health, sexuality, politics and more, while the totally offensive Inversion (Wednesday 4 to 5 pm) asks, “Have you ever woken up with a wet bum and no money?” Oh yeah, and they give out prizes in a classy weekly contest called The “Come” Shot.
