Sydney’s 795 Queen West, 416-603-3369 Rating: NNNNN
Sydney Mamane is Toronto's go-to guy for custom jeans. He started tailoring bespoke denim at Model Citizen on Dundas West two years ago and this May opened his own shop at Queen and Manning. The store is stocked with smart, simple men's- and womenswear by well-cut international lines like Alessandrini and Ted Baker along with leather goods by Montreal's M0851.
Mamane is a made-to-order man at heart, though, and the collections of vintage sewing shears and wooden rulers displayed on the boutique's walls speak to his one-of-a-kind fashion philosophy.
A custom pair of Mamane's jeans can be ordered in eight different denims, stitched together with 20 colours of thread and reinforced with rivets available in 20 styles. He drafts a personalized pattern for your blues and files it away so that when you return for a second pair, the price drops from $350 to $275.
Mamane's picks: The ultimate custom pair is a straight-leg silhouette cut in Japanese raw denim with rust-coloured stitching and saddle rivets, $350; Alessandrini's blue fine-stripe shirts taper to slim men's torsos, $210; Rag & Bone hand-makes a charcoal button-up women's T, $155.
Look for: Mamane's outfitting the store's basement with dye vats and sanding blocks to add wear-and-tear-style whiskers and washes to the custom blues.
Hours: Monday to Wednesday and Saturday noon to 7 pm, Thursday and Friday noon to 8 pm, Sunday noon to 6 pm.
