The week’s news, views and tips
Whether you believe in marriage or not, it’s hard to argue with the idea that the standard wedding is a bit of a waste. A decadent day full of idling SUV-limos and overeating are anything but eco. This weekend’s Eco Wedding and Lifestyle Show (www.ecoweddingshow.com) aims to change all that nuptial gluttony with green options (think organic florists and hemp gowns) for enviro-conscious brides and grooms. Visit the event at the Design Exchange (234 Bay) Saturday and Sunday (March 1 and 2), 10 am to 7 pm. $15 at the door.
College Street’s remaining dusty shoe shops filled with tasselled loafers and nonna sandals have their charm, but serious shoe lovers rejoiced when Balisi (668 College, 416-532-1074) arrived on the strip to sell fashionable footwear. They’ve cheered so loudly that a second larger location has opened at Queen and Bathurst to absorb the abundant love and shoe lust. Visit the new boutique at 711 Queen West (416-203-2388) to pick up a pair by Fly London, Steve Madden, Irregular Choice and other dust-free brands.
Rag & Bone (www.rag-bone.com) duo David Neville and Marcus Wainwright have built a quick empire out of their New York City-based denim and sportswear line. They appear at Holt Renfrew (50 Bloor West, 416-922-2333) on Saturday (March 1) to dish about good fit and their James Bond-inspired spring collection with Fashion Television’s Christopher Sherman. Ride the escalator up to the third floor to preview the spring looks starting at 2 pm. The live interview kicks off at 3 pm.
Playdead Cult (www.playdeadcult. com) co-owner Stu Dead launches his collection of hand-painted of Gibson and Epiphone guitars tonight (Thursday, February 28) at Shanghai Cowgirl (538 Queen West). Visit between 6 and 9 pm to check out Power Of The Axe… What’s Your Weapon of Choice, which also includes a series of GelaSkins pick guards designed by Dead. At 9 pm the party moves next door to the Bovine Sex Club (542 Queen West). E-mail email@example.com to RSVP.
