The week’s news, views and tips
As is often the case, one of Canada’s outstanding fashion talents has made a name for himself by designing abroad. But Erdem Moralioglu (www.erdem.co.uk) returns home today (Thursday, March 20, 1 to 3 pm) for an appearance at luxe Yorkville boutique Hazel (116 Yorkville, 416-503-0333). The public is invited to join media and customer guests for a preview of the fall 2008 Erdem collection. The modelling will be informal and cocktails will be served, but remember, kiddies, you’re in Yorkville, so keep your midday sloshing discreet.
Running parallel to Fashion Week’s official shows at City Hall is a calendar of nightclub events showcasing international labels. Tattoo Rock Parlour’s (567 Queen West) event tonight (Thursday, March 20) stands out because it features Carte Blanche’s (758 Queen West, 416-532-0347) Pink Cobra fashion show. The Queen West boutique, which creates its own avant-garde line of gutsy frocks and new-wave party gear, presents its chic spring stock at 11 pm. Doors open at 10 pm, and cover is $10.
Good Friday kind of throws a wrench into Fashion Week’s week-ness, and the final batch of shows catwalk today (Thursday, March 20) at Nathan Phillips Square. Circa (126 John) stays open on the stat holiday, though, and its Fashion Week bash in collaboration with Kidrobot (www.kidrobot.com) kicks off Friday (March 21) at 7:30 pm. Twenty Canadian designers, including Jeremy Laing, David Dixon and Paul Hardy, have been tapped to create custom Kidrobot Munny dolls that will be part of an online eBay auction benefiting War Child Canada. Doors open to the public at 10 pm, with Simian Mobile Disco on the decks.
As if the fashion crowd haven’t seen enough of each other this week, they’ll be gathering again Saturday (March 22) at the Drake Hotel (1150 Queen West, 416-531-5042 ext 230) for their Fashion Week Survival Brunch. Join design movers and shakers for a dainty midday meal between 11 am and 4 pm. After you’ve nibbled, head downstairs to the underground space, where Fashion Television’s Mary Kitchen will host a style salon of sorts, dissecting FW collections and gossip from 2 to 4 pm.
