It’s no secret that mid- to late July is second only to Boxing Day for amazing retail values. It’s not just passé trends that show up at 70 per cent off (or better), but, often, genuine classics. If you ever buy anything at department stores, this is the time. Right now, you can score men’s dress shirts by labels like DKNY, Jones New York and Christian Dior for $15 to $25 once they’ve knocked 50 per cent off the lowest sale price at the Bay. Walk into any store and you’ll find sweet deals.

Independent designers can’t afford to get into giveaway mode quite as easily as the mega-chains, so when a funky local label like Sim & Jones is knocking 30 per cent off most of their inventory, that’s big news. Their double georgette wrap skirt is now $119, down from $159 their retro striped bias-cut shirt is $89 (formerly $129), and their one-shoulder dress goes for $169, down from $195.
