Rating: NNNNN

With the miles of borrowed ice flashing on swanlike starlet necks at the Oscars last week like so many glistening drops of liposuctioned cellulite, we thought it was a good time to scour the city for some more affordable cool costume and designer bling bling of our very own. Harry Winston, take your diamonds and, well, lend them to Sharon Stone, will you?

Wear a little piece of cowgirl chic with this show-stopping horse choker with cascading beads by Montreal designer Tova (1. $185, Mink, 550 College, 416-929-9214). If you believe old Harlequins, there’s nothing sexier than a nurse in uniform. Oh, doctor, but, but, should we be alone this late in the operating room? Get your inner nurse on with this cute necklace by T.O. line Hoi (2. $28, Red Pegasus, 626 College, 416-536-3872). Glam floral and crystal designs come courtesy of Israeli artisan Michal Negrin (3. Red Pegasus, bracelet $280, ring $110). For your local stylish trucker or oh-so-ironic diesel dyke, a pair of Big Rig cufflinks by Toronto queens of kitsch Barbie’s Basement Jewellery (4. $26, Propaganda, 686 Yonge, 416-961-0555). The groovy vintage ball bracelet is by T.O. line Stanish (5. $90, Red Pegasus). Turquoise jewellery is, like, the new black this season, so you’ll be right in fashion with this chunky floral number by L.A. artist Tarina Tarantino (6. $65, Mink). Wear your heart on your pointy finger (7. $13, BBJ at Propaganda). Yes, we know this looks like a nipple, but really it’s a ring by Toronto line Togo (8. $15, Red Pegasus). This pretty, size-adjustable Ring For Things is made of sterling silver and filled with freshwater pearls. You can also open this baby up and put a few of your very own favourite things inside (9. $210, by Toronto’s Britta Klingenstierna at Made You Look, 1338 Queen West, 416-463-2136). Delicate silver circle links are by Vancouver’s Mimi & Marge (10. $130, Red Pegasus). Get a blue-resin-and-plexi bracelet with sterling silver accents, all tied up with a blue ribbon, by Toronto-based Jean-Sebastien Maillet (11. $430, Made You Look). Who needs Russia when you can have your very own neckful of red squares? (12. $20, T.O.’s Nola Grimes at Red Pegasus.) Dress up with a pink lucite bracelet (13. $38, Tarina Tarantino at Mink). Cameos are all the rage, so get it on grandma-style with this cool ring (14. $85, Tarina Tarantino at Mink). Wear a pretty rose ring (15. $80, Stanish at Red Pegasus). And, finally, charm the masses with an amethyst cuff (16. $115, Vancouver’s 3 Wishes at Red Pegasus).

Check out the Royal Ontario Museum’s talk on 1950s Canadian costume jewellery (April 6, 1:45 pm, 100 Queen’s Park, 416-538-8536) and Sherman jewellery identification clinic at Harbourfront’s Antique Market (April 7, 390 Queen’s Quay West, 416-260-2626).
