T&T SUPERMARKET 222 Cherry, 416-463-8113 Rating: NNNNN
For most downtown foodies, T&T Supermarket was an elusive grocery-shopping Shangri-La, too far away for weekly buys and emergency dumpling runs. But after years of bringing authentic Asian flavours to Markham and Mississauga, the mega-mart and its Sea World-sized fish tanks, colourfully wrapped rice snacks and rainbow of tropical produce arrived in the port lands last August.
Its blustery lakeside location still feels like you’ve gone to the ends of the earth for a pork bun fix, but inside it’s a slick mix of traditional treats and modern meal staples.
’Tis the season for a ceiling hung with red lanterns. Below are cling-wrapped packs of pork shoulder and lotus root ready for braising. Get lost in the library of soy sauces and burlap rice sacks. Skip your usual pop and down guava or tamarind soda. Cook and serve it all up in bamboo steamers, ceramic dishes and china teapots.
T&T Supermarket picks: Liberate a live cod for $12.99/pound; next to techno-orange Kraft Dinner sits acid green tea chlorella instant noodles, $3.99; a box of Chinese New Year treats includes sweet deep-fried dumplings and sesame balls, $6.88.
Look for: You can pick up TTC bus #172 from Union Station to Cherry, but if you’re feeling it’s still too far to stray, log on to www.tnt-supermarket.com and order up prepared plates, sushi platters and artfully assembled cakes for home delivery.
Hours: Monday to Sunday 9 am to 10 pm.
