The week’s news, views and sales

Size does matter

Yorkdale is basically the Godzilla of shopping malls, slowly crushing all competitors in its path. It seems the mega-mall barely finishes one expansion before starting another. Now Yorkdale has announced the opening of 10 new boutiques, including Jimmy Choo, Versace and Moncler, in the fall. A new wing to be completed by 2016 will add almost 300,000 square feet of space.

Get crafty

The Craft Ontario Shop (formerly the Guild Shop, 118 Cumberland, 416-921-1721, craftontario.com) transforms into a designer showcase until June 5. The Design For Living exhibit features home interior vignettes and answers the question, “How do you live with craft?” The mix of up-and-coming and established makers from across the province includes Lizz Aston, the Brothers Dressler, Normal Goods and Dayna Gedney.

Never too many toys

It’s your kid’s favourite time of year again: the Mastermind Annual Warehouse Sale from Wednesday (May 21) to May 25 at the International Centre (6900 Airport, hall 6). Get 40 to 70 per cent off brands like Lego, Thomas & Friends and Playmobil. (Adults who never grew up are totally welcome, too.) For details, see mastermindtoys.com.

Here come the brides

I harbour serious doubts about the institution of marriage, but even I’m pretty excited about bridal boutique extraordinaire Kleinfeld landing in Canada via The Bay’s flagship store (176 Yonge, 416-861-9111). Sure, it stocks all the big guns, but it really deserves kudos for its fair-sized collection of Canadian-designed gowns and accessories. Kleinfeld’s tapped the likes of Greta Constantine, Lucian Matis, David Dixon, Shay Lowe Jewellery Design and Erin Fitzpatrick to design bridal lines for the new store. Book an appointment at thebay.com.
