Toronto Living : Mind Blowing

Rating: NNNNN

WHO Sally McCubbin , www.sallymcubbin.com

SIGNATURE PRODUCT Even the most mundane snacking ritual can serve up a tasty bite of style. Glass designer McCubbin’s Chip n Dip bowl , available in a rainbow of watery hues, is ready to dish out a fast food smorgasbord of ruffles, points and crisps. A smaller interlocking vessel keeps a smear of your favourite spread close at hand.

DESIGN PHILOSOPHY McCubbin divides her work into two categories: functional and dysfunctional. The Harbourfront Centre resident’s line includes practical pastel glass mortars and pestles and orb-shaped bud vases. Conceptual options include abstract containers and cells. Whether it’s useful or not, McCubbin always blows out something playful, clever and unusual.

NEW WORKS “I toss around ideas for weeks in my head,” says McCubbin, whose brain is currently pondering a slew of cultural absurdities. Life’s sweet and quirky moments might manifest themselves in products like her super-dainty plywood and glass sake set or signature “issue boxes” painted with stylized enamel icons.

WHERE TO BUY IT $240 at Modern Objects of Beauty (www.mobcollection.com) and Made (867 Dundas West, 416-607-6384). Work is also available at Distill (55 Mill, building 56, 416-304-0033) and through the designer (info@sallymccubbin.com ).
