Winter Guide : Staying Home

Rating: NNNNN

Sexy-time fun

No better way to beat the cold than by staying under the blankets with some company gettin’ nice and dirty while showing off your brand new skills from sex seminars at Good for Her (175 Harbord, 416-588-0900, www.goodforher. com ) that teach everything from perfecting your blow job to burlesque dancing and Tantric techniques.

And the Oscar goes to…

Plunk your money on Helen Mirren and Marty Scorsese in the office pool, channel your inner Joan Rivers and prepare to marvel at how many supposedly great performances you haven’t seen. February 25. Airs on ABC and CTV starting at 8 pm.

Groundhog Day

Who gives a fuck if some rodent sees its shadow? This ritual did inspire one of the best films of the 90s, though, even if it does star Andie McDowell. It’s Bill Murray at the top of his game, so hit the rental shop and grab a copy, then settle back and celebrate the fact that Groundhog Day comes but once a year.

Game on!

The rush of video game releases generally ices up after the holidays, but there’s still plenty to keep our digits warm in the coming months, including Wario Ware: Smooth Moves for the must-have Nintendo Wii. Consisting of crazy 3-to-5-second micro-games, itll keep your ADD in check. Hot on its heels, denizens of Azeroth are avidly anticipating access to the Outlands in World Of Warcraft: Burning Crusade, the first expansion to the gargantuan MMO. Expect servers to be bogged down more than usual. Later on, prepare some comfort food in Cooking Mama: Cook Off, the Wii sequel to the DS dish.

Strut out to get Guitar Hero II for the 360 in March and show off your guitar riffing skills. And just as spring creeps back into the landscape, Edmonton’s Bioware busts out Mass Effect, the 360 sci-fi role-playing game exclusive. Start planning your “sick days” now. (Look for more hot tech and gaming items on nowtoronto. com’s game blog.)

Get laid

Really, is there any better way to spend a cold winter night (or morning, or afternoon)? But if you’re not getting laid, you’re not alone. Check out NOW’s annual Love & Sex Guide in the February 8 issue to make yourself feel better (or worse).

Super Bowl Sunday

The XLI edition promises to be the pigskin party of the year. And Prince performs at halftime. So hit the LCBO and invite the buddies over to watch the game on your flat-screen. February 4. Airs on CBS with opening kickoff at 6:25 pm.

Host a dinner party

They’re nicer when it’s cold out. At least that’s what we tell ourselves while staring longingly at our chilly patios.

Stitch & bitch

Start your own knitting bee where you can drink hot cider, shoot the shit and make cozy mitts and scarves.

DVD delights

Get out the popcorn – a slew of DVDs are streeting this winter. Watch for heavy hitters like Flags Of Our Fathers and Hollywoodland (both out February 6), The Departed , Half Nelson and Marie Antoinette (all out February 13), Babel (February 20), A Good Year and Stranger Than Fiction (February 27), Fast Food Nation (March 6) and Shortbus (March 13). For TV buffs, expect the second season of Dr. Who (January 16), third season of Mad About You (February 6), season ones of Picket Fences (February 13) and Family Ties (February 20), the final season of Moonlighting and season six of Northern Exposure (both February 27) and The Shield season five (March 27). Whew!

Get laid

Yeah, we said it already, but everyone will agree it’s worth mentioning again.
