York : budget buys

COVER : Eat, drink

Rating: NNNNN

York University’s Student Centre Market (4700 Keele) includes 12 rotating vendor stalls selling everything from clothing to cellphones next to the food court’s Yogen Früz and Jimmy the Greek booths. One stall is set aside for student sellers who want to test their retailing skills between classes.

Other York shopping suggestions come with a hope-you’ve-got-a-set-of-wheels clause. Unless you’re shopping for discount sofa beds or a primo set of Italian kitchen cabinets, the neighbours on Steeles aren’t going to satisfy the mildest shopaholism.

Further north toward the concrete peak of Wonder Mountain is Vaughan Mills (1 Bass Pro Mills, www.vaughanmills.com). Geographic isolation pays off with Browns (905-760-0307), Holt Renfrew (905-886-7444) and Nike (905-738-1054) discount outlets. NYC-based teen style shop Aéropostale (905-660-0628) just opened its first Canadian store in the centre. Bass Pro Shops Outdoor World (905-761-4000) is a trip, with a full-size fish-stocked pond mixed in with outdoor apparel and camping gear.

Two stops south of Downsview station there’s more mall action. Yorkdale (1 Yorkdale, 416-789-3261) might be the city’s best, and you can rub your proximity to it in the face of those snooty downtown U of T kids. Kitchen cabinets outlet
