Live At The Fillmore Los Lobos (Hollywood/Mammoth) Rating: NNN
Those who missed the stellar Los Lobos show at Harbourfront last July - or anyone who was there who wants to relive the experience - should check out the Live At The Fillmore concert DVD shot at the historic San Francisco venue just two weeks later, on July 29 and 30. It's a similarly cookin' performance characterized by the signature Los Lobos combination of passion and prowess, and covers much the same material, favouring 2002's Good Morning Aztlán and 2004's The Ride albums over the typical concert faves. Some people may be disappointed to learn that there's no run-through of La Bamba, but for just as many - myself included - that's welcome news.
Trainspotting guitar geeks will note that the song-to-song axe selection of Cesar Rosas and David Hidalgo is also very much the same as in Toronto. Actually, apart from a brief cameo on Viking by Hidalgo's guitar-tech son Vincent, the only major difference is the guest appearance of Robert Randolph on the Santana-esque closer Mas Y Mas, which the sacred steel hotshot turns into a lick-swapping showdown with Hidalgo. Of course, this being a Los Lobos show, it doesn't get nasty, but the one-off exchange is at least spontaneous enough to be the entertainment highlight of the production.
