LAC Profile: Alysha Brilla, food hugs and sleep

As part of this month’s Living Arts Centre Digital Residency, we’re featuring some of the artists audiences can see at this world-class performance venue in Mississauga.

How do you celebrate a great show?

We just returned from Singapore and it was such a great trip and we finished with a great performance. Typically, we celebrate with food and hugs and a good sleep.

Where and when was your first performance in front of an audience?

I was 14 years old and it was at my high school in Brampton for a school cabaret.

In one word, how would you describe your performances?

Positive.

What’s the most important moment in your career that happened off-stage?

When I decided I was going to produce my first full-length record. I hadn’t known any other female producers at that point and really questioned myself during the process, but it turned out great and validated my skills as a producer-arranger-composer.

Do you have any pre-performance rituals?

I will do yoga, light incense. I use sage medicine to smudge. I like to centre myself so I am in a good space for the audience.

What’s the strangest thing that’s ever happened to you on stage?

Sometimes I bring up audience members to dance and it’s always amazing to see the folks who look the most shy really breaking out of their shell. I suppose that’s not strange, but it is always surprising in a wonderful way for me.

Name one of your creative peers that everyone should see/hear right now.

Vivek Shraya.

What kind of experience are you expecting in Mississauga’s Living Arts Centre?

I am expecting amazing sound and a chance to tell some stories with my songs also.

What’s next for you?

Possible touring Australia later this year and hopefully going back to Asia to perform again! Shows all over Canada in the meantime.
