GLADSTONE HOTEL

GLADSTONE HOTEL 1214 Queen West 416-531-4635 Rating: NNNNN

VIBE The historic Gladstone Hotel has been undergoing extensive renovations over the past year, but the owners have retained the building’s original feel. The main floor is divided into three venues: the Art Bar, a tiny room used for live performances the Melody Bar, home to the Gladstone’s famously eclectic karaoke and the Ballroom, a larger space that hosts a wide range of events. The crowd ranges from artsy queer kids to crusty Parkdale regulars.

BATHROOMS If you were scared off by the decrepit state of the old facilities, you’ll be relieved to know it’s safe to return. The washrooms have been fixed up quite nicely.

SOUND & LIGHTS They’re not looking for any awards for their sound and lighting systems everything’s strictly minimal and functional. DJ event organizers sometimes bring their own speakers, since the Ballroom’s house system doesn’t push out much bass.

DANCING OR CHILLING While not primarily a dance club, the Ballroom has hosted its fair share of hip shaking, and Wednesday night’s Hump Day Bump in the Melody Bar often sparks boogie action.
