Urbane Cyclist

Urbane Cyclist, 180 John, 416-979-9733.

Rating: NNNNN

I must admit, my biking brothers and sisters, that my own cycle knowledge is somewhere between nada and zilch. I’ve done the occasional drunken alleyway double-up on a bike and try my darnedest not to goose racing couriers with my taxi door, but where to buy a bike? Luckily, every cyclepath I surveyed said, “the Urbane Cyclist.”

Urbane’s Reba Plummer thinks they rack up the kudos because they keep things honest. Experienced staff and mechanics help everyone from naive two-wheel newbies to professional pedal pushers pick up, trick out and maintain rugged mountain bikes, dandy cruisers and streamlined racers.

Single-speed city bikes are very in vogue, and a model from Urbane’s own own Urbanite line goes for $800. Strap the kiddies into the very cushy Chariot CX2 trailer for $775, or start training them for a life in the bike lane with their own Louis Garneau trike.

Urbane Cyclist Picks : Two-wheelers ranging from Brentwood’s 21-speed city bike for $300 to fab recumbents topping out at $5,000 a Wike bundle buggy helps pedalling pack rats, $200-$300 Plummer’s own line of Push The Envelope harnessed messenger bags comes in multiple sizes.

Look For : Their $50 spring tune-up, including a done-in-a-day cleaning, tire inflation and wheel truing for your winter-weathered bike. (Don’t forget to make an appointment.)

Hours : Monday to Friday 8 am to 6 pm, Saturday 10 am to 6 pm, Sunday noon to 5 pm.
