As Luck Would Have It

AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT Mongrel, 2011) D: Alex de la Iglesia, w/ José Mota, Saz lma Hayek. Rating: NNNN DVD package: none Rating: NNNN

The economic anxiety and media circus that drive the mix of black humour and life-and-death drama in As Luck Would Have It make the movie as sharp a take on the spirit of the age as any I’ve seen.

Madrid ad exec Roberto (José Mota) has been unable to find work for two years. He’s two months away from destitution, desperate and despairing. A freak accident just before the unveiling of a newly discovered Roman amphitheatre lands him on his back with an iron rod in his skull.

Roberto sees a golden opportunity. Amid the chaos of media, medics and politicians, he calls an agent and starts cutting deals for exclusive interviews. But his loving and beloved wife, Luisa (Salma Hayek), arrives and sees only vile exploitation.

Director Alex de la Iglesia keeps the action lively and tense, and for once our sympathies go to both sides of the money-versus-love battle.

Check out some of Iglesias’s other movies. I recommend Dance With The Devil, also known as Perdita Durango, for wild fun with Rosie Perez and Javier Bardem.

EXTRAS Spanish, French audio. English subtitles.
