Motivated by a news report, Juan Dominguez, a Los Angeles personal injury lawyer, launches a lawsuit in the U.S. on behalf of 12 Nicaraguan banana plantation workers made sterile by exposure to a long-banned pesticide. The defendant is Dole Food, one of the world’s most powerful companies. The case sets a number of significant landmarks in the fight for workers’ rights.

Director Fredrik Gertten takes us from Nicaragua, where Dominguez examines the scene and selects his plaintiffs, to the L.A. courtroom where Dole president David Delorenzo takes the stand and his high-profile legal talent pokes holes in Dominguez’s case.
