DE PALMA (Noah Baumbach, Jake Paltrow, U.S.). 107 minutes. Rating: NNNN
This is a feature-length tribute to Brian De Palma, a cult director if ever there was one, having given the world Carrie, Dressed To Kill, Blow Out, Scarface, The Untouchables and the first Mission: Impossible as well as The Bonfire Of The Vanities, Raising Cain and Mission To Mars.
Director/producers Noah Baumbach and Jake Paltrow simply sit their subject down and have him recount his life story, mixing in clips from his films as illustration.
There’s no outside commentary, which means his defences of later-period junk like Snake Eyes, The Black Dahlia and Femme Fatale go unchallenged, but that doesn’t really matter. The guy’s a hell of a storyteller.
