Death Race 2000

DEATH RACE 2000 (Shout Factory, 1975) D: Paul Bartel, w/ David Carradine, Sylvester Stallone. Rating: NNNN DVD package: NNNNN Rating: NNNN

This is the fourth or fifth release of the original Death Race 2000, but along with a great-looking new transfer you get over two hours of new extras, including informative interviews and an anecdote-rich commentary by second unit director Lewis Teague and editor Tina Hirsch. The Roger Corman/Mary Woronov commentary from an earlier edition is also included. Together, they supply a lively, detailed look at life inside the Corman film factory.

The movie itself remains highly entertaining, a zippy mix of violence, humour and nudity propelled by a berserk premise: a cross-country road race that awards drivers points for killing pedestrians.

EXTRAS Two commentaries, Corman interview, David Carradine interview, retrospective appreciation doc, source writer, car designer, costume designer and composer interviews. Widescreen. No subtitles.
