Deep six these castaways

LOST created by J.J. Abrams, Jeffrey Lieber and Damon Lindelof, with Matthew Fox, Jorge Garcia, Evangeline Lilly and Terry O’Quinn. Airs Thursdays at 8 pm on CTV and ABC. Rating: NNN

Lost is back on the air, and I have to admit I’m as lost as ever when it comes to understanding what the hell is going on with the survivors of Oceanic Flight 815.

Flash-forwards have replaced flashbacks as the primary tool for creating mystery and suspense, letting us in on what happens to some of the survivors after they get off the island.

This has the built-in effect of giving the show a previously missing sense of direction and finality.

We do know that some of the castaways – the Oceanic Six – do get back to the real world, or at least back to Los Angeles. And we know that Jack, Hurley and Kate are among them. But who are the other three? And what ever became of season one’s polar bear?

Intricately plotted, with layer upon layer of mystery and misdirection, Lost continues to be one of the most confounding series in TV history. Its fans are legion, and they are loyal, willingly following every twist, turn, cannonballing Camero and dead hobbit thrown their way.

But I’m not one of the ones the island is calling back.
