Dissecting Splice

Vincenzo Natali’s sci-fi freakout Splice has been slowly rebuilding its reputation since its disastrous theatrical run last summer. You couldn’t drag people to see on the big screen, but audiences are slowly discovering it on disc, and it turned up on a few end-of-year lists.

The Toronto Film Critics Association named Splice one of the runners-up for Canadian film of the year, and the movie landed on Canada’s Top Ten. Not bad for a movie ignominiously labelled one of last year’s weakest wide releases.

Tonight, though, Splice is poised to get the reception it deserves, as the subject of the Canadian Cinema Editors‘s latest spotlight screening. The film plays at 6:30 pm, to be followed by a panel discussion featuring Natali, editor Michele Conroy, producer Steve Hoban and visual effects supervisor Bob Munroe.

It’s surely worth braving today’s snowpocalypse to watch some very talented people discuss their misunderstood monster movie. Come see what the masses missed – and remember, it’s funny on purpose. Admission is $12 for civilians, $8 for CCE members and $5 for students and seniors.
