Chained

CHAINED (Anchor Bay, 2012) D: Jennifer Lynch, w/ Vincent D’Onofrio, Eamon Farren. Rating: NNN Blu-ray package: NNN Rating: NNN

Though it’s very tense and occasionally gory, Chained it’s not your usual serial killer movie.

Cab driver Bob (Vincent D’Onofrio) abducts a woman and her nine-year-old son, takes them to his isolated farmhouse, rapes and kills the woman but keeps the boy as a slave he calls Rabbit. For 10 years, Rabbit does domestic chores and cleans up after Bob’s murders, until Bob decides to bring him into the killing.

Evan Bird, who plays young Rabbit, and Eamon Farren, the teen, both give heartbreaking portrayals of beaten-down misery. D’Onofrio lets Bob’s monstrousness speak for itself, playing him as a weary, unemotional guy.

On their shared commentary, director Jennifer Lynch and D’Onofrio agree that Chained isn’t a horror movie, but a drama about the chain of child abuse. Otherwise, she spends much time raving about the performances.
