Introducing Someone Else’s Movie

Last month marked my seventh anniversary as NOW’s Senior Film Writer, a position I still can’t quite believe they let me hold. (Seriously, everyone, thanks for that.) And because I am an idiot, I decided to set a new challenge for myself.

If you follow my Twitter feed, you may have noticed multiple tweets about the Secret Podcast Project over the last few weeks. Well, it’s not a secret any more: Someone Else’s Movie is now live.

Every week, I’ll talk to someone in the film industry – an actor, a writer, a director, a producer, you name it – about a movie they love or admire, but with which they had no actual involvement. It’s a chance for artists to talk about art without having to worry about bringing it back to the project they’re currently promoting. Not an interview, but an actual conversation. Wanna hear what they have to say? Me too!

This is all Tatiana Maslany’s fault. During a phone interview last year for the DVD release of Cas & Dylan, we ended up briefly sidetracked by our mutual hatred of spoilers – she avoids trailers, too! – and our admiration for Jonathan Glazer’s Under the Skin. It didn’t make it into my eventual piece (and don’t bother looking for that it disappeared along with everything else I wrote for MSN Canada when they turned into an aggregator site last fall), but when I was transcribing the audio and heard how relaxed and enthusiastic she sounded in that section of the conversation, it hit me: This should be the show.

And now it is. I’ve been quietly reaching out to prospective guests over the last couple of months, pitching the show, and every single person who’s responded has come back with an intriguing and unexpected choice. It almost validates the hours I’ve spent bleeding from the eyes struggling to learn Audacity!

The first couple of episodes are locked, and if all goes as planned I’ll be rolling a new one out every Tuesday.  If you’re curious, why not subscribe on iTunes or follow it on Twitter? I will do my best to keep it interesting.

Oh, and if anyone reading this knows Tatiana Maslany, get her to check her DMs. Thanks.
