PREMIUM RUSH (Sony, 2012) D: David Koepp, w/ Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Michael Shannon. Rating: NNN; DVD package: NNN Rating: NNN
Yippee! The bicycle finally gets the chase movie it deserves. Perfect for this kind of flick, it's fast and manoeuvrable and can go places that cars can't. It makes a fine blunt instrument and, best of all, it affords the rider no protection at all. Director David Koepp takes advantage of these qualities with an immersive style and a refreshing avoidance of action movie clichés.
A hard-core bike courier has to get an envelope from one end of Manhattan to the other. On his trail are a crooked cop, a rival courier and an honest bike cop. It's rush hour and the clock is ticking.
The movie unfolds in near-real time but takes a few moments to look at the courier's world and work, explain what's riding on the envelope and give bad cop Michael Shannon opportunities to display his unique approach to out-of-control menace.
The extras provide a good look at the four big chases that propel the movie: bike versus car, bike versus bike, a bike race and bike versus pedestrians in an enclosed space.
