A Different Path

A DIFFERENT PATH (Monteith McCollum, U.S.). 96 minutes.

May 7, 7:15 pm, Royal May 9, 6:30 pm, Cumberland 3. Rating: NN

Painfully relevant in light of Toronto’s recent rash of pedestrian deaths, Monteith McCollum’s well-meaning but tedious doc looks at several grassroots activists attempting to reclaim their streets from cars and unsympathetic developers.

Subjects include a feisty group of seniors in a Seattle suburb, a New Yorker and a Portuguese man who both kayak to work, and Michael Louis Johnston, a Toronto musician and cyclist who fights for car-free days.

McCollum doesn’t build much tension, includes distracting and precious visual illustrations and adds banal observations like “The journey [is] more important than the destination.” Duh.
